Week 3 Preview

The tightest line on the board belongs to the first seed and the twelfth. Benji is 19-3 against the field, Tayler is 0-22, and ESPN has them 0.9 apart. Elsewhere, two managers have handed in a lineup with a hole in it: one has no defense on the roster at all, and the other is starting a quarterback who has been ruled out.

Week 3 matchups

Projected starter totals from ESPN, refreshed Wednesday evening. Spread is the gap between the two projections, nothing more.

Highest total
Uriel · 0-2 Balrogs 123.1
at
Yael · 1-1 Potatoe 129.7
Yael favored by 6.6 · 252.8 combined
Uriel leans onBijan Robinson RB · 19.5 proj
Yael leans onJahmyr Gibbs RB · 25.3 proj

The highest-scoring game on the board at 252.8 combined, with Yael favored by 6.6. Jahmyr Gibbs (25.3) is the top projected starter in the entire league, and he is pointed at the commissioner, who is 0-2, tenth, and 6-16 against the field. Uriel has Drake Maye (18.6) at quarterback and, for once, nothing flagged in his lineup, which leaves him nobody to blame but the schedule.

Widest on the board
Oriol · 2-0 Firebreathing Platypuses 107.0
at
Jordi · 1-1 Windwaker 123.9
Jordi favored by 16.9 · 230.9 combined
Oriol leans onAmon-Ra St. Brown WR · 19.9 proj
Jordi leans onJalen Hurts QB · 19.8 proj
Watch list: J.K. Dobbins (questionable), Saquon Barkley (questionable), Nico Collins (questionable), Aaron Jones Sr. (questionable)

Oriol is 2-0, the second seed, and a 16.9-point underdog, the biggest line of the week, mostly because there is no defense in his lineup. He does not have one on the roster, so that slot is empty rather than badly filled. Jordi has troubles of his own, with three questionable starters in Saquon Barkley, Nico Collins and Aaron Jones Sr., and 30% of his lineup on Philadelphia at Chicago on Monday night, against Oriol's Swift and Odunze on the other side.

Game of the week
Tayler · 0-2 Terrible Towel, Mediocre Picks 116.7
at
Benji · 2-0 Suzaku 117.6
Benji favored by 0.9 · 234.3 combined
Tayler leans onDe'Von Achane RB · 19.4 proj
Benji leans onJosh Allen QB · 23.6 proj
Watch list: Travis Etienne Jr. (questionable), Mike Evans (questionable)

First seed against twelfth, and a 0.9 spread. Tayler has scored 148 in two weeks, exactly half of Benji's 296, and has still been handed the closest game in the league. Josh Allen (23.6) and Justin Herbert (17.3) start against each other in Buffalo, so a good afternoon for one quarterback is a slightly worse one for the other.

One stadium
Dan Robot · 1-1 Dan Robot 127.7
at
Toño · 1-1 Seitseman 122.1
Dan Robot favored by 5.6 · 249.8 combined
Dan Robot leans onChris Olave WR · 17.8 proj
Toño leans onLamar Jackson QB · 21.1 proj
Watch list: Jaylen Warren (questionable), Zay Flowers (questionable), DJ Moore (questionable)

The machine is favored by 5.6 at 127.7, having swapped Rashee Rice for DeVonta Smith, which is the kind of thing it does without being asked. Toño has 38.2% of his lineup in Baltimore against Dallas, Lamar Jackson, Zay Flowers and Brandon Aubrey, and Dan Robot has Javonte Williams (15) on the other sideline. The bot will not watch the game. It does not know there is one.

Same quarterback, again
Misa · 1-1 Obsidians 113.4
at
Mario · 1-1 Stairway to Seven 102.7
Misa favored by 10.7 · 216.1 combined
Misa leans onPatrick Mahomes QB · 19.6 proj
Mario leans onChristian McCaffrey RB · 20.9 proj
Watch list: Jayden Daniels (out)

The lowest combined total of the week at 216.1, and Mario's 102.7 is the lowest projection in the league for one reason: Jayden Daniels is out and still in the lineup. Brock Purdy, projected at 20.8, is on the bench, which is exactly where he was last week when he scored 28.5 and Daniels scored 14.7. Misa leads by 10.7.

Title defense
Joe · 2-0 Photofreak 116.7
at
Sam · 0-2 Mean Machine 114.5
Joe favored by 2.2 · 231.2 combined
Joe leans onJaxon Smith-Njigba WR · 20.8 proj
Sam leans onDerrick Henry RB · 17.8 proj
Watch list: Malik Nabers (questionable), Jalen Coker (questionable)

The defending champion is 0-2, the eleventh seed, and 2.2 behind a Joe who is 2-0. Sam has two questionable receivers in Malik Nabers and Jalen Coker. Joe has Jaxon Smith-Njigba at 20.8, who scored 42.5 the last time anybody checked.

Game of the week

First against last

Benji has lost three of twenty-two all-play games. Tayler has not won one yet. The projections do not care about either number, and on Wednesday this is the closest matchup in the league.

0.9the spread, the tightest on the board
19-3Benji against the field, first seed
0-22Tayler against the field, twelfth seed
23.6Josh Allen, the top projected quarterback of the week, facing Tayler's Justin Herbert

Anyone can win one week, which is the whole reason the league has fourteen of them.

Manager spotlight

Three managers whose Sunday depends on something other than their opponent.

Firebreathing Platypuses · 1 ring Oriol
107.0 vs Jordi underdog by 16.9 · they project 123.9
Leaning on Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR, 19.9 projected · vs NYJ, Sun 1:00 PM ET
2-0 · seed 2W2 streakall-play 19-31 title25% in one game

2-0, the second seed, a 19-3 all-play, and no D/ST anywhere on the roster, which leaves an empty starting slot and a 107 projection. The 2018 champion does not need a defense to be good. He may need one to beat a 123.9.

Stairway to Seven · 2 rings Mario
102.7 vs Misa underdog by 10.7 · they project 113.4
Leaning on Christian McCaffrey, RB, 20.9 projected · vs ARI, Sun 4:05 PM ET
1-1 · seed 7W1 streakall-play 12-102 titles32% in one game

Last week he started Jayden Daniels for 14.7 over Brock Purdy's 28.5 and won anyway. This week Daniels is out, projected at 0, and still starting, while Purdy is on the bench at 20.8. With 71.7 projected on that bench, this is a lineup problem with an answer already on the roster.

Seitseman · 2 rings Toño
122.1 vs Dan Robot underdog by 5.6 · they project 127.7
Leaning on Lamar Jackson, QB, 21.1 projected · at DAL, Sun 4:25 PM ET
1-1 · seed 6L1 streakall-play 16-62 titles38% in one game

38.2% of his lineup is in one game, Baltimore against Dallas, the heaviest concentration in the league this week. His all-play is 16-6, third best, and he is 1-1. He is also 5.6 behind an autodraft bot that has a Dallas running back in the same game.

Lineups with a hole in them

  • Oriol: no D/ST on the roster, so the slot is empty. The only lineup in the league with eight starters.
  • Mario: Jayden Daniels, out, at quarterback. Brock Purdy, 20.8, on the bench.
  • Jordi has the most flagged starters in the league, three, all questionable.
  • There is time for all of this to be fixed before kickoff.

Worth knowing

  • No byes again this week. The first ones arrive in week 5.
  • Three teams are 2-0 and three are 0-2. The 2-0 teams play the 9th, 11th and 12th seeds.
  • Ten league starters are in Baltimore against Dallas, including players on both sides of Toño against Dan Robot.
