Week 2 Results

The preview called week 2 the week the schedule got audited. Benji was projected to lose by 8.9 and won by 64.2, Joe went from 1-10 against the field to 10-1, and the commissioner lost the closest game of the week by 11 with a 17-point receiver on his bench for the second Sunday running.

The scoreboard

JordiWindwaker 99.8
UrielBalrogs 88.8
The closest game of the week, 11 points, between the eighth- and eleventh-best scores on the board. Jordi won it with a 75.4% lineup, the worst-managed in the league, and Uriel lost it with Parker Washington's 17 on the bench. More on that below.
BenjiSuzaku 163.5
YaelPotatoe 99.3
The preview had Benji losing this by 8.9. He won by 64.2: Josh Allen 40.8 on Thursday, Davante Adams 39.7 on Monday night, and Dalton Kincaid 22.5 at tight end. Yael's 99.3 would have beaten three other teams this week, none of whom he was playing.
ToñoSeitseman 112.3
OriolFirebreathing Platypuses 131.9
Game of the week on a 0.8 spread, settled by 19.6. Amon-Ra St. Brown scored 35.2 and Dalton Schultz 26 at tight end. Toño started DJ Moore for minus 0.1 with Denzel Boston's 20.5 on the bench, and you can do that subtraction yourself.
MarioStairway to Seven 102.1
TaylerTerrible Towel, Mediocre Picks 76.4
The preview flagged Tayler's kicker against Mario's defense. Chris Boswell 5, Patriots D/ST 21. Mario is favored by 8.8, wins by 25.7, and none of his receivers scored more than 8.5.
SamMean Machine 92.2
Dan RobotDan Robot 107.1
Favored by 8.6, won by 14.9. The machine left DeVonta Smith's 27.9 on its bench, the single most expensive bench decision in the league this week, and won anyway, because it does not check. That is its one mention.
JoePhotofreak 144.4
MisaObsidians 124.7
The shootout, 269.1 combined. The preview's tenth-of-a-point pair finished two tenths apart - Jonathan Taylor 29.2, Patrick Mahomes 29 - and then Jaxon Smith-Njigba scored 42.5 and made the comparison academic.

The awards

Award 01

Luckiest Win

Jordi
99.8 points, 4-7 against the field

The eighth-best score of the week, a lineup that captured 75.4% of its own ceiling - last in the league - and a starting running back, Saquon Barkley, who scored 3 on a 17.6 projection, the biggest bust of the week. He also benched Dak Prescott's 29.8 to start Jalen Hurts for 16.2. He bought them for the same price specifically so he would never have to choose, and then he chose. 1-1.

Award 02

Unluckiest Loss

Misa
124.7 points, 8-3 against the field

The fourth-best score in the league, enough to beat eight of the eleven lineups he was not playing. Mahomes scored 29, Stefon Diggs 21.7 on a 10.3 projection, and he drew the second-best score of the week. Jake Ferguson's 20.3 on the bench would not have saved it either; the margin was 19.7.

Award 03

Highest Score

Benji
163.5 points, 11-0

Josh Allen threw three touchdowns and ran for two, 40.8 points in a league that pays 4 for a passing touchdown, and Davante Adams added 39.7 on a 15.5 projection, the biggest overperformance of the week at 24.2 over. A 94.3% lineup, the best-managed in the league. Benji moves up three seeds to first, and nobody else went unbeaten against the field.

Award 04

Player of the Week

Joe
Jaxon Smith-Njigba, 42.5

Three receiving touchdowns on an 18.5 projection, the best single performance in the league. Jonathan Taylor added 29.2, which is the two-stars half of the running joke doing its job. The preview's audit found Joe sixth on a 1-10 all-play; he answered with 10-1 and the third seed.

Award 05

Bench Regret

Toño
20.6 points in one slot

DJ Moore started at wide receiver and scored minus 0.1. Denzel Boston sat on the bench and scored 20.5. The game of the week was lost by 19.6, so that single swap wins it. Two-time champions do not usually need this explained to them, which is why it is in an award and not a footnote.

Award 06

Tight End Heist

Oriol
Dalton Schultz, 26 on 8.9

A tight end 17.1 over his projection, on a roster whose quarterback scored 6.2. Amon-Ra St. Brown's 35.2 did the rest. The 2018 champion is 2-0, second seed, and has the second-most points in the league at 272.8, which is the ring the draft awards page forgot, still working.

Award 07

Title Defense

Sam
0-2, and 11th seed

Malik Nabers was projected 14.9 and scored 1.1. Sam lost by 14.9, to the autodraft bot, which is the kind of coincidence that feels personal. Dontayvion Wicks scored 12.4 on the bench. Two weeks into a title defense, and the champion is eleventh of twelve.

Award 08

Defensive Player

Mario
Patriots D/ST, 21 on 7.6

No other starting defense in the league scored more than 8. It was Mario's second-highest scorer, behind only Christian McCaffrey's 22.6, and it arrived the same week he benched Brock Purdy's 28.5 to start Jayden Daniels for 14.7. Stairway to Seven sits seventh for the second week in a row.

Award 09

Lowest Score

Tayler
76.4 points

Sam LaPorta scored 17.2 on the bench behind Kyle Pitts' 2.7, but the best possible lineup from this roster was 93.3 and Mario scored 102.1, so no swap was going to do it. Jaylen Waddle's 21.8 on a 12.2 projection is the bright spot. Twelve weeks of regular season left, and the team name is still the best in league history.

Commissioner's corner

SAME BENCH, SECOND SUNDAY

The week 2 preview noted that Uriel had fixed his week 1 mistake by moving Jadarian Price into the flex, for a projected gain of 0.4. Price scored 5. Parker Washington, on the bench for the second week running, scored 17.

17Parker Washington, on the bench, again
5Jadarian Price, in the flex he was promoted into
11the margin he lost by, in the closest game of the week
0-2and tenth seed, four championships notwithstanding

A 12-point swap in a game lost by 11. The commissioner wrote the tool that computes this, and it is not taking his side.

What the bench cost

  • Three managers benched a quarterback who scored nearly thirty: Jordi (Prescott 29.8, started Hurts for 16.2), Yael (Goff 29.8, started Mayfield for 12.2) and Mario (Purdy 28.5, started Daniels for 14.7). Two of them won anyway.
  • Only two managers lost a game their worst single decision would have won: Toño, 20.6 against a 19.6 margin, and Uriel, 12 against 11.
  • Benji at 94.3% and Joe at 94.1% set the two tightest lineups in the league. Both are 2-0.
  • Jordi set the loosest, at 75.4%, and is the only manager on this list with a win to show for it.

Standing notes

  • Three teams are 2-0: Benji, Oriol and Joe. Three are 0-2: Uriel, Sam and Tayler, holding six championships between them, all six belonging to the first two.
  • Benji and Joe climbed three seeds each. Yael and Toño fell three, and both are still inside the seven.
  • Mario is seventh again, the last playoff place, for the second week in a row. The team name is not a prediction, but it is being very consistent about it.
  • Outside the line: Dan Robot eighth, Jordi ninth, Uriel tenth. Twelve weeks is a long time.
